Exercise: exercising, up to the day before your surgery can improve strength, range of motion and endurance. Conditioning and strengthening the upper body will help to reduce muscle soreness and fatigue caused by the use of a walker, crutches, a cane, or other stabilizing aids.
Healthy Eating: healthy eating and proper nutrition before your surgery aids in the healing process.
Hydration: stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
Closely follow any pre-surgery instructions prescribed by your surgeon.
Pre-Operative Home Safety Preparation
Preparing your home, and help you might need before you have surgery will help keep you safe, make your life easier, and aid in your recovery.
Traffic: move rugs, extension cords and other tripping hazards out of your walk way. Create a clear path from bed, to bath to kitchen so you can move around easily.
Chairs: Sit in chairs that keep your knees lower than your hips. Avoid sitting on soft pillows, or in rolling chairs or recliners.
Children & Pets. Make sure you arrange for assistance or care if you have children and/or pets.
Meals: Arrange for help with meals, or have pre-made dinners prepared prior to your surgery.
Driving: Make sure you make arrangements to have someone drive you to your after surgery appointments. DO NOT DRIVE until your surgeon gives you the okay to do so.
